Luckpilling

My research focuses on the concept of luck, how humans understand luck and how those beliefs impact their behavior. I call my work luckpilling because my goal is to help everyone embrace the truth that everything is luck. The suffix “-pilling” is internet slang based on the movie The Matrix and means roughly “awakening someone to a taboo or difficult truth”. Helping individuals internalize the truth that everything is luck, while avoiding a slide into fatalism or nihilism, is crucial for developing the virtues needed for a life of flourishing, particularly compassion, empathy, gratitude, and humility. I have a book on this subject currently under contract with Rutgers University Press.
